Blogging has been around for a lot of years now which entails very detailed content, specifics , information about the product, place, food, pricing and so on! But the new thing I hear about these days is – Hey I am a Insta Blogger! I met someone earlier this month who was super enterprising and had a fabulous Instagram account , so I wanted to take a look at her work for inspiration and asked her for her blogging website , well , turned out – she didn’t have a blog, she said I am a Insta blogger! Is this the new and abbreviated version of a blog? , I asked myself!

I got into blogging for the pure love of writing and spreading my views to the world about what I am wearing, eating, places I have been to so far and so forth. But I know a lot of people now who are only on Instagram and are doing very well for themselves .  By no means am I judging anyone , Instagram is my no 1 social media obsession too, but I just wonder if blogging is taking a different route now?

People are increasingly turning toward Instagram not just as a place to post filtered photos, but to showcase their lives and thoughts into some meaningful captions as well.

Pros of Instagram Blogging

 .
 .
1. Quick– It is the quickest way to communicate with the audience. Hours of writing content vs 10 minutes of developing a post
 .
 .
2. Visual Delight: We are all visual cultures and Instagram is tapping right into that emotion. I love featuring beautiful pictures on my Instagram account . Add a few filters and there, its ready to be posted.
 .
 .
3. Hashtags: This is by far the strongest medium to get to different kinds of audience which is super beneficial in the long run too. Around 30 hashtags can be used for one post at the moment. Although I have read lesser the hashtags better the post but I dont agree with this logic at all. To cater to a wider audience , I think it is absolutely ok to use as many as you like to.
 .
 .
4. Noticeable : PR agencies will notice you a lot more if you have a strong instagram account vs a strong blogging website. I dont think people have the time to go through blogs and see how a person is fairing with each article. There are number of people who are very successful and dont own a blogging website honestly. Kudos to you all:)
 .
 .
5. Instant Result: Within the first 3 hours , you know how your post has performed in the outside world. 2-4% of likes is an excellent rate to have as per what I have read. So if you have 10,000 followers and your posts garners – 200+ likes then you are acing it at all levels. For a lot of you , this would be a way to also gage when the accounts have fake likes.
 .
 .
6. Real Interactions: Insta blogging has opened up my world to some lovely bloggers who I can safely call my friends. We meet for coffee ‘s too, yes its just not about liking each other post in a robotic way but getting to know the real person behind the profile.

 Cons of Instagram Blogging
 .
 .
 .
1. Buying likes: This is a trend, and I wont lie to you if I say I haven’t done this for my posts, when I just started out. But after a few posts, I realized it wasn’t worth it after all. The accounts that started to like the posts were faceless, nameless and you could tell in a glance that this are just bots, this gave me a low rather than the high due to the soaring numbers. If you see my account now – I have between 1–3% likes on my posts and not more but I know that these are all real people , a lot who I communicate with on a daily basis on my instagram account. Of course some posts can go viral with a lot more attention .
 .
 .
2. Buying followers: This is a trend too, fortunately I never did this after my experience with the likes, because I was sure I dont want any fake accounts on my profile. In fact there are times when a faceless account with few posts start to follow me and I block them right away ( hopefully they aren’t real people). So a word of advice- if you are real , please out a picture on your profile, and mention that this is not a fake account as chances are you will be blocked or further more reported by a lot of people.
 .
 .
Due to the above 2 points, I personally feel the credibility is lost when you buy likes and followers. But at the same time , the people who are working really hard and genuinely tend to loose the number battle. This is a complete let down at times , and I am sure you find yourself wondering if you should spend those few dollars and buy the 1000 followers, but something I have learnt with time , is the right people will follow you and collaborate with you for your work not for the numbers.
 .
 .
3. Addiction: Well, I am guilty for this part. I am completely addicted to my Instagram account which takes away my time from doing a lot of other things I could be doing. But I dont know how to change this part- if you do, please let me know:)
 .
 4. Essence of writing: With Insta blogging , the essence and flavor of writing is lost . The love you have for developing content takes a back seat over how can I get the maximum likes on this post which is a downer for me. Please dont get me wrong , I love it when a post reaches a large number of audience, but developing a post keeping the target number in mind is a let down.

My question to you?

  • Shagun! I love your honesty! I am a newbie in blogging and just started and got so good tips from your post already!!

  • So true! Love how you’ve listed it all down. The con are such a let down, I personally feel sometimes good blogger also give in to the buying business as they see everyone else doing it and I guess some brands dont look at the authenticity of the followers and just see the mere quantity.
Anyways, like you said, irrespective of numbers, you will find a lot of genuine people on Instagram. I, for sure, am addicted.
It was such a lovely read, thanks for sharing!
